An Inspiring Journey from Nepal to Times Square

Chhimi Sherpa, an international student from Nepal, is living her dream in New York, working at the SpringHill Suites New York Manhattan Times Square to complete her Curricular Practical Training, a work-study program for full-time international students with F-1 visas.

Growing up in Lukla, a town at the foot of Mount Everest, Chhimi was immersed in the hospitality industry from a young age through her parents, who own a hotel. Her upbringing instilled in her a passion for serving people and celebrating the rich diversity of guests who visit the region from all corners of the globe.

Chhimi said hospitality feels like home. “Every time I offer hospitality to a guest, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment knowing that my efforts have made their day better,” she said. “It reminds me of how grateful I am to be part of something that brings joy to so many.”

After completing her master’s degree in hospitality in Nepal through a college affiliated with Westcliff University in Irvine, California, Chhimi decided to pursue a master’s in business administration at Monroe University in New York, where she was recruited by Neil Genel, talent acquisition manager in M&R’s People & Culture department.

“This is Chhimi’s second semester with us,” said Neil, who recruited Chhimi through Monroe’s hospitality management program. Monroe offers a 20% tuition discount to M&R employees pursuing degrees in hospitality, he added.

Sana Arshad, assistant general manager at the SpringHill Suites New York Manhattan Times Square and Chhimi’s supervisor, said she is a “star performer” who is “quickly becoming an invaluable asset to the team.” Sana credited Chhimi’s enthusiasm for learning, dedication to excellence and interpersonal skills with enabling her to build genuine connections with guests.

“Her presence has not only enhanced the guest experience but also uplifted the entire team,” Sana said.  “She approaches every situation with a positive attitude and a calm demeanor, which is essential in the fast-paced environment of a hotel. We truly believe that Chhimi has a bright future ahead in hospitality, and we’re lucky to have her on board.”

Chhimi said her training enables her to work with seasoned professionals and learn from their wealth of experience. “Working at SpringHill Suites has allowed me to collaborate with talented individuals who have been in the industry for a long time,” she said. “It’s wonderful to be part of such an amazing team, and I learn so much from each person here.”

Working in the heart of Times Square is more than just a job, she said, adding, “Coming from a small country like Nepal, being able to work in the U.S., especially in New York City, is truly a dream come true. I’m incredibly thankful to M&R for giving me the opportunity to work in the heart of Times Square and making this dream possible.”

Chhimi hopes to bring the skills and knowledge that she gains in the U.S. back to Nepal, aiming to elevate the hospitality sector in her home country. “I am eager to continue growing in this industry and make a meaningful impact on people's everyday experiences,” she said.
