Engineer by Day, Photographer by Night
Continuing our series of team member profiles, this issue features Erik Melendez, an engineer at the Fairfield by Marriott New York Manhattan/Central Park, who is an accomplished photographer.
As an engineer, Erik’s tools include wrenches and paint brushes. But when he’s off duty, his tools of choice are two Sony cameras for still photography and two GoPro cameras for shooting video. Erik, who has been at the Fairfield for four years, loves his job, his first at a hotel, especially learning how mechanical systems work. He also loves photography. New York, where he was born and raised, is one of his favorite subjects.
“I’ll go out on my bike at sunset or early in the morning on my days off and shoot the bridges and buildings, when the city is still quiet and the light is particularly beautiful,” Erik said. He shoots both black and white and does his own printing and video editing. Gradually, his photography is beginning to attract notice on social media and digital photo galleries from admirers as far away as the Netherlands and Australia.
His colleagues at the Fairfield are also fans. In addition to the opportunity to grow as an engineer, Erik enjoys getting to meet people from around the world who are guests at the hotel. “They soon get to see for themselves how amazing the city can be,” he said.
Examples of Erik’s photography are featured below.
