Looking Back on a Year of ‘Significant Change’
Cleo Clarke, vice president of M&R’s People & Culture department, oversees the global human resources function and its strategic direction. When he joined the company in 2021, he brought with him a people-first, customer-first philosophy. His vision was to create an environment where employees feel supported, engaged and empowered to achieve their full potential. That vision led to changing the Human Resources department name to People & Culture.
“The transition was made because there was a need for us to have a dedicated focus on people; not just see them as resources, but as hearts, minds, bodies and souls that are valuable members of the team,” Cleo said. “We felt making this transition would be a powerful statement, not only for People & Culture, but for the entire company.”
One year later, the department can reflect on many proud achievements, he said, adding that the team has focused on employee training, development and growth as well as automated processes and portals for easy benefits access. The department also introduced a behavioral assessment tool, created a digital newsletter that can be accessed by every employee and implemented new tools, such as a texting system that enables M&R to reach every employee nearly at the same moment.
The culture at M&R is family-oriented and very hands-on, he said, adding that his team works closely with hotel staff to get to know everyone and to serve as strategic business partners in addressing any needs. “We believe in a people-forward philosophy,” he said. “If we take care of our people, they, in turn, will take care of our guests.
“Looking back, I strongly believe it has been a significant change. People are recognizing our efforts as a team and as a company to put people at the forefront. This has been a massive shift for us, and employees are starting to see that shift. I am really proud of my team. They are the heart and soul of what we do from a People & Culture perspective.”
