In an initiative to focus team members on the importance of staying healthy, M&R launched the company’s first companywide Wellness Days in August and September, featuring medical consultations, a healthy lunch and fitness-related giveaways.
Mureka Walcott, M&R corporate director of human resources, said the event was sparked by survey results earlier in the year showing employees want to improve their physical well-being. The company partnered with a company called Vital Check to provide on-property doctor visits in New York.
Dr. Jose Batlle conducted physical exams at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel New York Times Square West on Aug. 31 and Tarrytown House Estate and Fairfield by Marriott New York Manhattan/Central Park on Sept. 27. Check-ups included cholesterol and diabetes screening, comprehensive blood tests and nutrition advice.
Team members who elected to meet with the doctor were entered into a drawing for prizes, including smart watches.
A typical healthy lunch included wraps, fruit and vegetable salads, apples, yogurt parfaits, granola bars, vegetable juice and bottled water.
“Given their busy lives, both at home and on the job, it’s easy for team members to delay or put off completely staying on top of their basic health,” Mureka said. “The company’s Wellness Day was meant to be a reminder not to take good health for granted.”
Wellness Day was celebrated Sept. 16 at the Midwest hotels.
